Well i can help you with what i can....
I have decided to come up with series of posts, these posts will consist basic Tamil words and their simple English words which we use everyday.If you are interested to learn a new language, you may find it helpful, Not at all interested in learning Tamil, am sorry this post is meant only for people who are traveling to TN and for people who are interested in learning Tamil:)

    nice... I did stay in chennai for nearly 2 years but by the ned had managed to learn Enga - where and Nooro - hundred.. because every auto man would ask me Enga and every destination costed me Nooro !!!

    Good one. Basics are important..I live in chennai but not tamil.. my first words were podum and venda.. Because I was served 2 people's food by my sister's hostel warden. Her way of showing love was serving large amounts of rice :D

    WOW...this is really awesome what you're doing...but are these the bookish Tamil words or the regular-usage words? coz there's a lot of difference...if these are the words used in the normal everyday usage, then I'm glad to be a student...have always wanted to learn Tamil.     honestly i needed this. Am here for the last 5 years and dunno any tamil. Nice way to learn. Although you need to brush up the english translations. Coz there is no way people say "how long is that temple?". That's incorrect english.

    But i want to learn tamil. so I'll manage. I guess u wanted to say tall or far. dunno if the tamil word for long, tall and far is the same

    Nice post Deepak :) iam not tamilian and had to stay in chennai for 2.5 yrs.. with my experience of learning tamil, i can say- words that you mentioned are really useful for a beginner perspective.I learnt tamil by observing others speak, i never heard of word 'Maalai vanakkam', may be its more formal

    Your next one should be on counting 1 - 10! That was the first thing I had asked my Tamilian friends to teach me when I was a kid. Also, of course, "My name is.."
    And later, one post of all the slang and gaalis! That will be useful to use on the Chennai autowalas!
